El coronel irlandés Flynn Patrick O'Flynn (Lee Marvin) se propone hacer una incursión relámpago en una colonia alemana del África Oriental para hacer contrabando de marfil. Cuenta para ello con la colaboración de Sebastián Oldsmith (Roger Moore), un estirado inglés educado en Eton. El plan fracasa cuando el comisario alemán Fleischer los aísla con la ayuda de un acorazado. A pesar de todo, Flynn y Sebastián consiguen escapar al bloqueo. Cuando los dos aventureros regresan, por fin, a casa, surge el amor entre Sebastian y Rosa, la bella hija de Flynn (Barbara Parkins).
