Dans les années 1960, Jean Seberg, comédienne principale d'À bout de souffle et icône de la Nouvelle Vague, fut l'une des victimes du programme de surveillance COINTELPRO, mis en place par le FBI. Son engagement politique et romantique avec l'activiste des droits civiques Hakim Jamal fit d'elle une cible idéale qui permit au FBI de lancer une campagne de dénigrement à son encontre afin de discréditer le mouvement de revendications du Black Power.
